Why do I need a fountain?

Where do we begin? Fountains add the one thing to a garden that beautiful blooming plants and trees cannot – an auditory experience. Few things are more soothing than the sound of running water. Your days of resting on the patio will be brought to new heights of relaxation with the calming white noise of a fountain. Additionally, they can be used to mask the less pleasant sounds from your backyard: a neighbor’s swamp cooler, for instance.

Fountains are also beautiful to look at and add interest.  They come in all shapes, sizes, heights, and colors. Different styles of fountains also move water differently. Choose between running, bubbling, pouring, and cascading fountains depending on your taste and preferences. Some fountains are large and in charge, ideal for the focal point of your yard. Others are smaller and work well as an accent piece.

Where do I put a fountain?

Determining where to place your fountain can be tricky. Fountains can be placed anywhere in your garden. Some people use their fountains as the centerpiece of their landscapes, others use it as a destination piece at the end of a walkway. Regardless of where you decide to put it, you’ll have to prepare the area before bringing your fountain home.

A fountain must be placed on level ground. It is often helpful to remove any grass or plants from the area ahead of time and create a level base using stone or gravel and topped with a flat paver. Your fountain will also need access to an electrical outlet. When selecting a fountain, talk to our Fossil Creek Nursery staff about how to best prepare your yard for it.

What maintenance does a fountain require?

Like everything else in your garden, fountains will require a little bit of maintenance to continue functioning well over the years.  Fortunately, the maintenance is simple!

Your fountain will need to be cleaned. Drain it and lightly scrub the bowl with a cleanser every few months. The pump needs to be cleaned every three months to keep it free of debris and dirt. Follow your owners’ manual for instructions on how to remove it and clean it out.

To extend the lifetime of your pump, keep it running as often as possible. You don’t have to turn it off at night or when you leave for work during the day. Maintaining a consistent water level in Colorado usually means you will have to add water to the fountain. Our climate is very hot and dry, so if your fountain pool doesn’t automatically refill itself, you will have to pay attention to the water levels and add water when needed.

Depending on what your fountain is made out of, you may have to purchase a special cleaner to prevent staining or damaging your fountain. For example, copper, stainless steel, or limestone fountains will need a cleaning solution developed for that material.
