You and the family have bundled up and ventured out to pick out your fresh-cut Christmas tree for the holiday season. Now is the time for bringing it home and keeping it alive through the whole season. Here is a list of steps on how to care for and expand the life of your tree.
1. Cut the base of the tree
Before putting your tree in a tree stand, make a fresh cut of ¼ to ½ inch to the base of your tree. This will allow the trunk to take in more water to spread throughout the tree’s branches.
2. Water
A fresh-cut tree can take up to a gallon of water in 24 hours. Make sure the water covers at least 2 inches of the bottom of the trunk. Check it daily and top it off if you need to.
3. Wait
When you first bring your tree home, give it some time to take in some water and for the branches to drop before you decorate.
4. Keep your tree away from heat
Christmas trees are used to a colder climate and thrive better in lower temperatures. Make sure your tree is kept away from heaters and warmer areas of your home to help prevent the needles from drying out.
5. Lights Out
Christmas trees can easily catch on fire. Remember to turn off your Christmas tree lights if you are planning to be away from home for a long period of time.
6. Recycle
Local recycling centers will accept your old Christmas trees for a period after the holiday season. Check your local city’s websites to see the available drop-off locations.
