Fossil Creek Nursery Houseplant Favorites
October 25th, 2019
It’s getting cold outside, so cozy up inside with our Fossil Creek Favorite houseplants! Our greenhouse is looking fabulous this time of year, bursting with houseplants that are waiting to find their forever home with you.
The ornamental pepper plant can be grown outdoors and makes for a great houseplant! This sun-loving plant adds a pop of color with its unique abundance of tiny peppers. Place it in a south-facing window and water it well to keep them bright and vibrant. Fun fact – while the peppers are technically edible, they probably won’t taste good and are very spicy!
Swiss Cheese Plant
Monstera is commonly known as the ‘swiss cheese plant’ because of the naturally forming holes in its leaves. The swiss cheese appearance helps the plant to survive in its natural habitat, the rainforest. The holes help prevent breakage due to strong winds or heavy downpours. Besides the rainforest, it does very well in large rooms with indirect light, such as an office lobby or your home foyer.
If you see this plant in our greenhouse, you’ll quickly see why it is called the ‘goldfish plant’. The bright yellow and red blooms look like leaping fish in a sea of dark green leaves! As a tropical plant, it needs lots of light and to be misted lightly each day.
Commonly known as the ‘snake plant’, Sansevieria is a very low-maintenance houseplant! The soil should be almost completely dry before watering. This plant is also particularly good at cleaning your indoor air by absorbing toxins through their leaves. They then produce oxygen, even through the night (which many plants don’t do).
While each plant on this list is supremely unique, we think the Fizzle Sizzle really tops the charts. Its tubular leaves grow straight up and then tightly curl into circles at the ends. It will grow flowers in the spring, but at this time of year, the leaves are interesting enough all on their own. This plant does best with a lot of sun and should be fully dry between watering.
