Citrus Plants

February 18th, 2019

Were you under the impression that all plants hibernate during the winter? Think again! Right now, our citrus plants are growing at full force, blossoming and ready to produce some deliciously sweet fruit. At Fossil Creek Nursery, we love that these plants have vibrant colors and are so aromatic. A citrus could be the perfect addition to your home. We’ve spent years learning about which plants thrive in Colorado, and we can help you choose some citrus to liven your place up!

Although you may be surprised to find out that citrus can grow in Colorado, they do very well indoors and are easy to take care of. Exposure to freezing temperatures can be damaging to the citrus, so the outside Colorado weather isn’t too friendly to these plants during the wintertime. However, the winter is when they begin to flower, so when kept inside, they can fill your home with sweet scents.

Citrus fruits include lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruits. Your citrus will need to be watered regularly and kept in well-drained potting soil. The soil should be damp, not wet. When deciding on placement, choose the sunniest room in your house, as the citrus loves bright light. Many of these plants can grow quite large outdoors, but if pruned, they can stay small enough to be a houseplant. Fertilize them with an all-purpose fertilizer during the summer. Citrus should only be fertilized when it is actively growing.

tangelo

We love this Tangelo that is producing some gorgeous orange fruits right now. About the size of your fist, these fruits are tangy and juicy! If you do plan on eating the fruits that your plants produce, make sure to use organic methods to fight infestations.

We also have Bearss Lime trees which are flowering and getting ready for a productive season. Also known as the Persian lime, this plant can grow quickly and produces limes about 2.5 inches in diameter. It can be kept smaller by pruning and yields several fruits perfect for baking or cocktails!
