5 Health Benefits of Gardening

At this point, we’re a few weeks into the government mandated stay-at-home order, with several more weeks to go. It can be tough to remain cooped up all day long, day after day. Luckily, there are things you can do for your mental health that will make staying at home a little easier. One of those things (that we are big fans of) is gardening!
Gardening is a great form of exercise! It allows you to be outside, moving your body, and getting a healthy dose of endorphins. Gardening is considered an aerobic exercise. Activities such as weeding, hoeing, tilling, raking, trimming, and lifting can increase muscle tone and strength. In order to stay safe, remember to keep your back straight and use a cushion if spending time on your knees. Bend your hips and knees when picking up tools or using a shovel. Gardening will help you feel relaxed and happy at the end of the day.
Gardening helps bring stress levels down! Instead of worrying about work, getting food, or the other stresses of daily life these days, you can just focus on the garden in front of you. Your mind will be concentrating on digging in the dirt, weeding, or whatever else you are doing and give you a mental break.

When you garden, you are caring for a living creature! Caring for your plants will give you a sense of purpose. Plants give you a reason to get out of bed each day and water them, prune them, or check up on their new growth!
Connect with Nature
Nature is good for you. Numerous studies have shown that “being in green”, or observing outdoor landscapes, is linked to lower anxiety and depression levels, improved stress management, and boosting your mood! While we are advised to stay home and avoid public places, health officials have still been encouraging us to go outside and feel the sunshine because they know the massive benefits that come with getting fresh air and being in nature.

In the uncertain times of this pandemic, we are feeling less in control than ever. No one knows how long this will last, but we just take it one day at a time. Meanwhile, gardening can put us back in control. This aspect of your life can be organized just how you’d like. Knowing that you can be in charge of your garden can be very therapeutic.
