Poinsettias - they’re the most iconic plant of the season and sometimes the most finicky to care for. December 12th marks National Poinsettia Day, so we’re here to give the holiday how-to on all things poinsettia!
Poinsettias mark the start of winter holidays, which began in 16th century Mexico. Legend has it that a young girl was too poor to provide a gift for the celebration of the Christmas holiday, so she gathered weeds from the roadside to present. The crimson blossoms sprouted just as she was giving her gift. It was thought to be a holiday miracle that such a striking color could come from what they thought were weeds.
Since then, poinsettias have always been highly recognizable around the holiday season. The plants bloom between December and January, and their red and white color brightens up any area!
Proper Poinsettia Care
After purchasing your poinsettia, place them in a sunny window of your home or office. Since the plants have tropical origins, they appreciate as much direct sunlight as they can get. To keep them happy and in bloom as long as possible, maintain a regular temperature of 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit.
Water the plant when the surface of the soil feels dry to the touch. Continue to water them until the water drains out of the bottom of the plant, but don’t let the plant sit in a puddle of water. Since we live in a dry climate, you may find yourself watering your plant every day.
With the proper care, poinsettias can last year-round. Continue your regular care until April. Gradually decrease the watering frequency and allow the soil to get dry in between watering starting April 1st. Once the plant has acclimated to the dying process, move it to a cool spot like a basement or heated garage that stays around 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
Once you see new growth forming, begin fertilizing every two weeks. Move it outside in June, bringing it back inside around August. Continue your normal care until October 1st. From October to November, the plant must remain in complete darkness from 5 pm until 8 am to allow buds to set.
